Alice Goodspeed Wooding

1905 – 1993
was a true Bethany character, very independent and eccentric. She loved children and animals but never married and had no offspring. Alice lived in the 200-year-old homestead on Wooding Hill Road. The family installed a telephone in 1898 but did not get electricity until the 1970s! Alice wore men's clothes most of the time and did almost any kind of job. She raided many animals, chickens and sheep especially. Alice babysat children, hauled trash, did gardening, enjoyed fishing, played cards, and was a fixture at town meetings. Longtime neighbor Russ von Beren did and excellent presentation about her in 1999, which is now in the library on DVD or at the historical society YouTube channel. Her burial marker was made by Peter Horbick.
