Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven

The Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven (JHSGNH) is a member organization of the Ethnic Heritage Center at Southern Connecticut State University. Founded in 1976, our mission is to collect, publish, and preserve materials related to and to serve as a research and educational center documenting the history of the civic, cultural, and religious contributions of the Greater New Haven Jewish community. Our collections tell the story of Jews in Greater New Haven and all our work centers on preserving our holdings and making them accessible to the public. Our motto is “Embracing the Past, Living the Present, and Planning for the Future".

Our archives include synagogue, cemetery, organizational, and business records, personal and family papers, historic photographs, genealogical material, and local Jewish newspapers. A major strength of our holdings is audiovisual materials, including more than 300 oral histories about Jewish New Haven and over 400 audio/video tapes that preserve the society's and related programs, meetings, and events. We also have a research library and large object collection.
