The Middlesex County Historical Society
Founded in 1901, the Middlesex County Historical Society in Middletown, Connecticut, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes the preservation and enjoyment of local history. Museum exhibits, walking tours, online and in-person talks, performances, and a city-wide essay contest for Middletown third graders are among our many annual events.
The Middlesex County Historical Society is headquartered in the General Mansfield House, one of the few residential structures still standing on Main Street in Middletown. Built about 1810, this Federal brick mansion was the home of Civil War hero General Joseph King Fenno Mansfield, who was mortally wounded at the battle of Antietam in 1862. The Historical Society purchased the house from General Mansfield's descendants in 1959, saving the historic building from demolition.
The General Mansfield House's colorful gardens and verdant back lawn contain many stone signs and outdoor artifacts, including the 1893 cornerstone of the old Middletown City Hall, demolished in 1961. The gardens are open during the Society's open hours and for special events.
The Society's museum and archives safeguard thousands of documents, photographs, and objects that reflect the rich history of Middlesex County, with a particular emphasis on Middletown.
