Dan Calabrese
1927 – 2001
Who made it: Dan Calabrese (b. 1927), born and raised in Waterbury's North End, has worked as a visual artist and as a playwright. From 1963 to 1965 he was an editorial cartoonist for Waterbury’s The Sunday Republican. He spent several decades teaching art at the University of Connecticut, retiring in 1989. For many years he was active in the Waterbury Civic Theater and at the Mattatuck Museum, serving as Fine Arts Consultant with the Fine Arts Committee.
He has created several mural paintings for buildings such as St. Raphaels Church, Bridgeport and the Elton Hotel, Waterbury. He has also designed tapestries for Temple Israel, Waterbury.
Calabrese received a BFA and an MFA from the Yale School of Fine Arts, where he studied with Josef Albers and Louis York, and a Fulbright Fellowship for study in Rome, 1951-52. His work is in the collections of the Fogg Museum, Harvard University; the New Britain Museum of American Art and the Wadsworth Atheneum.
