James Daugherty

1889 – 1974
James Henry Daugherty was one of America’s first avant-garde painters. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, Daugherty grew up in family that stressed culture. He studied at Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he studied with William Merritt Chase. He published his first illustration in 1904 (for Treasure Island) and from that time pursued a career as an illustrator. But it was his work in color theory that marks him as an early Modernist.
