Tread, Animal-powered

Horse Tread Mill

circa 1900 (Date manufactured/created)
132 in H X 34 in W 72 in L
The industrial revolution provided opportunities for farmers to use their work animals in more productive ways.  One way was to use horse power to power machinery.  This is not new, but how they could be used were.  An animal powered treadmill could be hooked up to any number of other machines -- threshing, winnowing, corn grinding, saws and more.  Animals would walk on a belt, similar to modern exercise teadmills.  A wheel and belt would attach to other machinery and provide operating power.

This treadmill was advertised in the Sears Roebuck mail-order catalog and sold for $95.
