Tape, Magnetic

1987 (Date manufactured/created)
Cassette Tape #4 containing audio recordings made on June 25, 1987 and July 28, 1987 in which the architectural firm Galliher and Baier of Simsbury, CT presents ideas and concepts regarding plans for the new addition (Mills Building) to the Society's campus. Discussion covers concerns about the size and configuration of the site, parking, matching existing exterior features and materials, consideration for the neighbors, need for exhibit space and collection storage area, possibilities for repurposing the interior spaces in the Wilson building.

Side 1 (June): Initial meeting with the committee focuses on where to place the new addition, whether they can consider changes/modifications to the spaces and functions in the Wilson Building, and placing priority on the exterior design and how to make the new structure most optimally fit the site and match the existing buildings. Further conversation included discussion of the need to remove a large black walnut tree, parking, not alienating the neighbors, pros and cons of various fire protection/suppression systems, lighting from fixtures and windows, and other projects Galliher & Baier have worked on.

Side 2 (July): Followup presentation reviews many of the same topics and strives to answer questions which have been supplied by the committee to the architects. Topics include keeping the Fyler House as the main focal point visually, how to connect the new addition to the existing Wilson building, difficulties of matching brick to the aged brick on Wilson, pros and cons of possibilities for parking, windows - interior shutters, how to avoid loss of display space in galleries, architectural feature on exterior, light emitted re: public spaces vs display space, etc.

Tape was digitally reformatted in 2008 by John Berky to archival wav and mp3 formats as well as digital audio use copies. See 2008.87.9 and 2008.87.19 and 20.
